The Sovereign Military Order of Malta has launched a major project to enhance and make its historical archive accessible online. This priceless collection of documents and books is now open to consultation. With the use of Arianna4, Hyperborea’s well-known archival software platform, the Magistral Archives of the Order of Malta have been described, digitized, and catalogued in a system that is easy to navigate.
Several companies in Gruppo Panini Cultura participated in the project, including Mida Digit for the digitization of documents and Haltadefinizione for archiving and integration with the Coosmo platform. This collaborative approach allowed the team to complete the complex digitization of 150 items from the historical collection.
Hyperborea designed the Arianna4View platform to support strategies of valorization and consultation of the archives. It features an interactive map linking cities such as Rome, Malta, and Naples with many others across Europe, as well as a visual timeline spanning centuries of history, from the Priories to the Grand Masters of the Order.
The importance of digital accessibility to the heritage of the Order of Malta lies in its ability to promote a mission and a history that extends over a thousand years. Making these archives freely accessible not only facilitates study and research by scholars, but also opens new paths of access and engagement for the general public, thus enhancing the culture and historical value of the Order in an innovative way.
