Franco Cosimo Panini Editore had the honor of participating in the celebrations for the bicentenary of the Egyptian Museum in Turin by presenting the volume Memory Is Our Future. It is the official publication for the Museum’s 200th anniversary, edited by its Director, Christian Greco.
The book offers an unprecedented perspective at every aspect of the Egyptian Museum — going beyond a simple reconstruction of the institution’s history in Turin, its collections, or its reception and renown. Thanks to a multi-voiced structure, every aspect of the Museum’s life is presented within the broader context in which it exists.
The authors of “Memory Is Our Future” are the curators of the Egyptian Museum as well as teachers, researchers, and curators from other national and international institutions, whose articles alternate, sometimes in dialogue with one another. In this way, the contributions form a kind of workshop where ideas, visions, and proposals are compared on a wide range of themes. These include the Museum’s role in the development of Egyptology, the integration of the humanities and the sciences, and relations with other museums, scholars, and the public. The book also explores the imagined Egypt of “Egyptomania” and the real Egypt that asserts its own voice in telling its history.
The volume was received with great interest and enthusiasm by the public, going into a second printing less than a month after its initial release.
