Estense Digital Library was created to digitally transform a significant part of the heritage of the Biblioteca Estense Universitaria in Modena into a structured platform that is accessible and designed for long-term use.

Between 2019 and 2021, the companies now united within Gruppo Panini Cultura contributed to the development of this infrastructure. The project was carried out as an integrated workflow: from the digitization of cultural assets to the production of ultra-high-resolution images, from metadata creation and digital asset management to the development of the software that now makes this heritage accessible and interoperable.

This integration of expertise is one of the defining features of the Estense Digital Library. The wide variety of materials involved – manuscripts, illuminated codices, maps, musical scores, seals and large-format documents – required different acquisition procedures developed to respect the physical characteristics and conservation needs of each work.

Digitizing hundreds of thousands of pages was, in fact, only part of the work. A digital library takes shape when images, metadata, descriptions and preservation systems are designed to work as a single ecosystem capable of preserving data over time.

Each document was therefore described, linked to its metadata and integrated into a system capable of preserving not only its image, but also its context and its relationships with other materials.

The result is a platform in which every digital object can be searched, linked to other documents and made available according to standards that ensure its preservation and long-term reuse.

The Estense Digital Library demonstrates how the success of a project of this scale depends on strong project management, essential for coordinating acquisition, data management and publication.

This ability to integrate different areas of expertise within large-scale digital transformation projects for cultural heritage is now one of the defining strengths of Gruppo Panini Cultura.
